The first step of the UX Process is to Understand.

A UX designer must understand and keep sight of what’s best for the business, its users and product, making sure everything is in alignment. Without this understanding it’s impossible to have a clear strategy.

The process kicks off by making a business case for UX design, as UX tends to misunderstood and undervalued in organizations. It’s also usually a good idea to conduct a heuristic evaluation to see how the software currently stacks up against common usability standards.
